도서출판 재원에서는 남천 송수남의 전 작업을 개괄하는 작가론으로 구성, 출간하였다.
방대한 남천의 작업을 다 보여줄 수는 없었지만 남천께서 작업하신 방식의 다양성을 보여 주려는 노력은 하였다?. 대표작과 더불어 가능하면 일반인들이 잘 보지 못하였던 작품들 위주로 수록 작품들을 선정하였다. 이미 잘 알려 졌지만 남천은 70년대 후반부터 80년대를 걸쳐 한국화, 특히 전통 수묵화를 현대화 시키는 장엄한 문화운동의 시발자였고 완성자였다.
그 후 한국화를 하는 많은 사람들이 그 영향에 기인하여 한국화를 몇 단계 업그레이드 시키게 되는...

Above all, the greatest feature of Song Soo-nam’s sumuk paintings is that it combines the art world of the past, the current, and the near future. Song stylistically possesses an open position regarding all areas from concepts to abstractions. However, the physical form of concepts and abstractions is unimportant because nature is what bears art, according to Song. Drawing nature as the eye sees it is conceptual, and drawing as you feel is abstract. Thus, the physical expressions of concept and abstraction aresimilar to the inner and outer elements of an object for Song. – Kyeong-seong Lee (Critic)
무엇보다도 남천의 수묵화의 가장 큰 특징은 옛것과 지금의 것, 그리고 앞으로 다가 올 예술의 세계를 하나로 종합하고 있는데 있다. 양식적으로도 구상에서 추상에 이르기까지 모든 분야에 개방적 자세를 지니고 있는데, 그에게 있어서 구상과 추상이라는 외형적인 양식은 그리 문제가 되지 않기 때문이다. 왜냐하면 화가 남천에 있어서 작품의 모체가 되는 것은 어디까지나 자연이기 때문에 그 자연을 눈에 보이는 대로 그릴 때는 구상이 되지만 마음에 느낀 대로 그릴 때는 추상이 되는 것이다. 그러기에 화가 남천에 있어서 구상과 추상이라는 외형적인 표현은 결국 물체의 안과 밖이라는 관계에 있는 것이다. - 이경성 <미술평론가>

My work is the essence of my materials, or the pure formative language achieved by water, meok, and paper. It is a way to seek man’s perpetuality which transcends ideas and realities, and expressing the natural spirit inherent in sumuk. Further, pursuit of the essence of sumuk, moderation and conciseness, integration and adaptability, over greed, predation, and selfishness in today’s advanced industrial society where man and nature are becoming more disconnected and desolate is my self-reflective work activity. – Soo-nam Song
나의 작업은 재료가 가지고 있는 물질의 본질, 즉 물과 먹 그리고 종이가 이루어내는 하나의 순수한 조형언어이다. 현실과 관념을 초월한 인간의 영원성을 추구하는 방법이며, 그 수묵 속에 내재되어 있는 자연적 정신을 표현하는 것이다. 더욱, 오늘과 같이 자연과 인간이 분리되고 황폐해 가는 고도의 산업사회 구조 속에서 탐욕과 포식, 이기심 보다는 수묵의 정신인 절제와 간결, 융합 그리고 순응성을 추구하는 것이 바로 나의 자아반성적인 작업행위이다. - 송수남

Sumuk is a material and at the same time an emotion. It is a form, but at the same time has substance. The substance is not simply designating a category of subject matter, but a kind of mind system. In truth, the difference between sumuk paintings and other types of paintings can be found here. A new self-awareness and recognition of sumuk painting were unfolded during the series of sumuk painting exhibitions from the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. This series of exhibitions were not a collective presentation of sumuk paintings as a simple genre of art, but had the purpose of a cultural movement in which to pursue our intrinsic affective system through the form of sumuk. The artist at the center of this movement was Song Soo-nam – Kwang-soo Oh (Art Critic)
수묵은 재료이면서 동시에 정서이다. 형식이면서 동시에 내용이다. 그 내용은 단순한 소재적 범주를 지칭하는 것이 아니라 일종의 정신체계이다. 실로, 수묵화가 다른 종류의 그림과 다른 특징이 여기에 있다. 수묵화에 대한 새로운 자각과 인식은 70년대 후반에서 80년대 초에 걸친 일련의 수묵화전을 통해 활기 있게 전개된 바 있다. 이때 전개된 일련의 수묵화전은 단순한 장르로서의 수묵화의 집단적 발표라기보다 우리 고유한 정서체계를 수묵화란 형식을 통해 추구해보자는 일종의 문화운동의 성격을 띤 것이었다. 이 운동의 중심에 있었던 작가가 남천(南天) 송수남이었다. - 오광수 <미술평론가>
